Tonight’s lesson: Polyolefin oxidative degradation and atmospheric ageing.

Or; why your sticks get better, then worse, then better, then a lot worse, over time.

World’s first useable custom molded pan tip? Just a prototype, but it’s been over 6 months getting here. Still a way to go, but final parts are an awful lot closer ☺️

Thanks to Quanzhou Shengda Rubber Products - https://sdseal.m.en.alibaba.com - and more so to Lana for putting up with my endless nonsense and floating random pieces of rubber in washroom basins for no obvious reason. Every little helps? 🤷‍♂️😋

Custom molded tips, before and after 2 weeks UV exposure ☀️☀️☀️. Difference is obvious, and sounds a *lot* worse in person 😋

Spot the difference 😉

Answer:
One has a standard, widely used latex medical tube tip.
One has quite possibly the world’s first custom molded rubber tip.

Which is which? Beats me 🤷‍♂️ 😉👍👌

After Salmon Cupid's E-pan app last week, he mentionws another by Sterling C Sample Sr - the Steel Pan Tutor App. Unlike the E-pan app, this has a windows/mac version too, so I had to try it out :).

For the most part, it's very similar to the E-pan app. In fact, *astonishingly* so, causing plenty of comment from both parties. I only tried both this week but, merely from a code perspective, there are indeed many similarities, even down to one very specific software *bug... So I'm staying well out of that :\

Focusing on the app though - the usefulness of a desktop app over a phone app, especially when learning pieces, is quite obvious. Steel Pan Tutor is missing the Guitar and Bass from E-pan, and uses a D instead of C tenor layout, but does includes a 3rds/4th style layout (for the one person in the country using it Navina Nallamuthu 😉 )

One tip though - delete (or move) the wavs folder under SteelpanTutor/app (by default, C:\Users\[user_name]\SteelpanTutor\app\wavs). They cause slight latency when playing back midi files meaning the highlighted section is just out of time. Remove the wavs folder entirely and it's fine (renaming doesn't seem to work, and you may need to reboot after). Sounds still work, just with default pan synth and not the custom recorded sounds.

If you have a midi file you need to learn (I'm still waiting for Duvone to send me those renegades ones 🙁 ) you can purchase the desktop app at http://steelpantutor.com for around £7.50. Except, you can't, cos it's all broked and stuff, but email sterling696@gmail.com and he'll sort you out 😉 The iOS version is also MIA, but was there a few days ago under "Steel Pan Tutor" (spaces required) so hopfully it'll turn up again soon.

*Oh that bug - whether Steel Pan Tutor or E-pan, for MIDi playback you'll need to change the octave to one below that of the selected pan's root octave. Ie. Tenor select Octave 3, Seconds select Octave 2, etc etc, as both apps mistakenly put playback in the wrong octave.
